Charlie Woods Saves Par at TPC Sawgrass' Island Green

Charlie Woods matched some of his father's short-game craft at the par-3 17th during the first round of the AJGA Junior Players Championship on the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Sept. 4.

Woods, 17, faced a 134-yard tee shot to a back-right pin. His wedge shot appeared headed for the water before landing on the players' footpath and rolling about 30 feet down, leaving him a tight chip. He put the chip within 4 feet of the hole and made the putt for par.

How does it compare to Tiger's famous 17th-hole shot?

Charlie's father, Tiger Woods, made one of the most famous shots in Players Championship history at the same hole in 2001, holing a 60-foot, double-breaking putt that NBC's Gary Koch called "better than most." Tiger went on to win the tournament, the first of his two Players titles.

Charlie Woods is one of four players in the Junior Players field who are sons of past Players Championship winners, joining Dru Love (Davis Love III), Tyler McCumber (Mark McCumber) and Cameron Kuchar (Matt Kuchar).

Woods began his round at the 10th hole, offsetting bogeys at 11 and 14 with birdies at 15 and 16. He closed out his opening nine holes with an 18-foot birdie putt at the par-4 18th, moving into a tie for second place at 1 under par.

Woods tees off at No. 1 at 10 a.m. in the second round on Sept. 5. The tournament concludes Sept. 6.
