Pinehurst No. 11 by Coore and Crenshaw to Open March 29, 2027

Pinehurst Resort has set March 29, 2027, as the opening date for Pinehurst No. 11, a new Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design built on a former sand-mining site south of the main resort. Tee times, available only to resort guests, went on sale the same day the date was announced.

Where is Pinehurst No. 11 located?

The course occupies the eastern portion of Pinehurst's 900-acre Sandmines property, about four miles south of the main resort. It sits next to Tom Doak's Pinehurst No. 10, which opened in 2024 on the western half of the same land and touches No. 11 at several points. Golfweek's Best ranks No. 10 as the second-best public-access course in North Carolina and 19th nationally among public-access courses.

What makes the site unusual?

Decades of sand mining beginning in the 1930s left the land scarred with spoil piles and excavated ridges, since reclaimed by pines and native vegetation. Rather than smooth the terrain, Coore and Crenshaw built the routing around its jagged ridges and mounds.

"I call it weirdly wonderful," Coore said in a media release announcing the opening date, adding that the landforms make the site feel "mysterious."

What is Coore and Crenshaw's history at Pinehurst?

The pair has worked in the Sandhills since the 1970s and led the celebrated 2011 restoration of Donald Ross's Pinehurst No. 2, a U.S. Open anchor site through 2047. Pinehurst has also brought in Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner for a 2018 redesign of Pinehurst No. 4 as it expands the Sandmines property.
