Tom Fazio to Design Indoor-Outdoor Golf Courses for CityGolf USA

Golf architect Tom Fazio has agreed to design eight indoor golf courses for CityGolf USA, a new venue concept that pairs simulator technology with real putting greens. The first location opens in Nashville this winter.

How does the CityGolf USA format work?

Golfers hit tee and approach shots into simulator screens. When a ball reaches the green, the screen lifts to reveal a physical green complex built with artificial turf, where players finish the hole for real. The concept is similar to the setup TGL uses at its arena in Palm Beach State College, Florida, where touring pros including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy compete in televised matches.

Fazio will design the courses through Fazio Design Technologies, a firm founded by his son Gavin Fazio, who also serves as president of Fazio Design, the family's traditional course-design business.

What will the Nashville location include?

The first CityGolf USA facility will occupy 174,000 square feet at City View Building 6 in Nashville. Beyond the 18-hole simulator course, the venue will include a restaurant, a bar, event spaces, driving range bays and a short-game practice area.

The design pairs simulator tee shots with a real green to finish every hole.

“A great golf course is always accompanied by a great environment,” Fazio said in a statement announcing the partnership.

CityGolf USA is adapting a format already established in Asia. Locations will be open to public play alongside limited founding memberships, and the company has expansion plans for additional U.S. cities within the next year.
